Kinkaku-ji Temple Garden and the Golden Pavilion Adress: 603 Kyoto-shi, Kita-ku, 1 Kinkakuji-cho. Tel: (075) 461-0013 Date: In 1391, shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu began conversion work on the Kitayama dono, the "villa of the northern hills" first built in Kamakura times. He transformed it into a lavish recidence in which to spend his retirement and named it Rokuon-ji "Temple of the Deer Park". After his death it became a buddist temple. Style: Pond garde designed to be enjoyed by boat, foot and from inside the buildings. Special features: The complex is popularly known as Kinkaku-ji, the "Temple of the Golden Pavilion", after its main attraction, a three storyed pavilion in southern-Chinese style. The pond is divided into two parts by a large projecting peninsula. The smaller half of the pond close to the Golden Pavilion features a crane island and two turtles islands, one "arriving" and one "departing". The outher, large zone contains just a few small rock islands, it thereby creates the illusion of lying long way away. The slopes of the garden contain a classic Dragon Gate waterfall with beautiful carp stone. Best Time to Visit: In Spring for the cherry blossoms or in autum when the maples are at their most colorful. A visit on one of the rare snowy days in February is equally magical.
